(1/25 continued...🧵) First let me go into some background. Earlier this year we launched VIVE Pro 2 and VIVE Focus 3, our best in class PCVR and Standalone headsets.

At HTC, we're constantly thinking about how to make VR more accessible, how to improve the way we use immersive computing.

.@MKBHD did a good interview with @getpeid on some of the costs behind a smartphone, but I'd like to go a bit deeper into the details.

So, a thread:

4 key prices OEMs in general care about
-BOM - Bill of materials
-COGS - Cost of goods sold
-Sell in price
-Retail price

[1/12] You sometimes see headlines like "$999 iPhone only costs $400 to make". Generally these headlines are from calculating the cost of individual components. This is a significant part of the BOM but there are other parts. e.g. SW licenses may also have a cost per unit sold.

So I made a PAPR (powered air purifying respirator) over the past week in my spare time during self isolation. It was mainly to see if I could do it and ended up learning some cool new skills!

Here's a thread of the steps in designing & building this thing, with pics! (1/11) This wasn't specific for COVID-19, would help with allergies too. I took a spare HEPA filter for my vacuum cleaner and wondered if I could make it. I bought a fan, fan controller and figured I could probably fit it in a compact box. (2/11)
