This one is actually my story, about adapting to massive scaling challenges, a gamble that didn't pay off, and the work of my friends in Traffic SRE, particularly my beloved colleague @_jdh. Buckle up, we're going for a trip down memory lane! So Google had been growing pretty rapidly, and that meant that more and more, parts of services needed to spread out across datacenters. Traffic SRE and the LB team had been working on adapting Google's frontend application level balancer to route backend RPC traffic as well.

We just got done sharing some thoughts on large scale monitoring and telemetry with MISO, and I wanted to share a few reflections on applying lessons from internet scale systems to managing the electrical grid. (Firstly, the terminology is awkward. I'd describe what I did at Google as "distributed systems engineering", but in utilities every one of those words has a different and specific meaning. Distribution *grids* have systems engineers, who design physical networks - not software.)

As many of you know, I've been increasingly interested in climate change and climate solutions over the past few years.

A few years ago, I started asking myself: I'm a software infrastructure leader, with a specialty in reliable distributed systems - what can I do to help? I believe that climate change is the defining challenge of our generation, and our children's, and it's gonna be all hands on deck.

So, I am pleased - and trepidatious, and hopeful - to announce that after 14.5 years at Google, I am leaving to found an energy tech startup.
