Simplify without impoverishing (he/him)

They’ll be blaming online anonymity next How on Earth can they look at this shambles and conclude that the solution is to get rid of the County Championship, as opposed to, idk, massively improving the County Championship?

Although this thread does make some valid points, it doesn’t reckon with the reality that the left really has been betrayed by a significant number of supposed progressives. The relentless ‘this you’-ing may be poor strategy, but it’s hardly inexplicable. The people who destroyed Corbynism and are now excluding the left from the political process. A couple of hundred years ago when people were being denied food there were bread riots. Now people are being denied political representation, they’re kicking off on Twitter.

We can’t keep getting outnumbered in midfield. The fact that we consistently fall apart in the second half HAS to be connected to the central midfielders being knackered. #SaintsFC It’s a measure of what a bunch of dinosaurs we have in the press box that nobody even asks Ralph about this.

When you think about it, it’s really very weird that Labour keep telling journalists not what their policies are but what their strategy is, and these journalists- who consider themselves simultaneously representative of and superior to the general public- say ‘Yes, good’. These journalists are less like reporters and more like university lecturers marking undergraduate essays on their own ideology.

The logic by which the only way to stop MPs being corrupt is to pay them obscene amounts of money is rooted in a pessimism about human nature that is fundamentally bourgeois. Notice this logic is not applied to crime when the crime is committed by people outside the bourgeoisie. Eg they never argue that we should stop drug dealers by removing the incentive to deal drugs.

‘Pay elected representatives ten times the average UK salary to ensure they represent the interests of their constituents’ I wonder how this would impact the likelihood of a higher top rate of tax? 🤔

Something I missed while writing this is that Le Tissier probably felt some kind of solidarity with Saints/Southampton precisely because he was part of a team, something bigger. I’d imagine his wild beliefs now are at least partly informed by a post-industrial society. Since retiring as a player, Matty probably hasn’t really done a lot of work that’s involved the creation of anything tangible.

In all seriousness, socialist running, cycling and rambling clubs are all things that should be quite easily doable, would lead to real benefits for the left and would obviously be much more effective than Being A Prick On Twitter. I mean as much as anything if we can’t get a few comrades together for a kickabout then how the fuck do we think we’re going to organise a strike?

It’s fair enough to do ‘20 points ahead’ dunks on this, but I worry that it obscures the reckless malice and self-interest that has led Labour to being ten points behind this government. Labour has chosen to adopt a politics that’s been repeatedly rejected by almost everyone outside a tiny milieu of the political and media classes with very niche opinions, and chosen to launch a plainly spiteful revenge campaign against its own most well-meaning members.

So all along the beef wasn’t with Ashley being a piece of shit, but with him not putting money in? If I had a choice between Southampton being owned by a piece of shit who’d milk us and a piece of shit who’d bankroll success, of course I’d choose the latter. But I wouldn’t be acting out this bizarre charade of saying it’s about identity and getting my club back.

I wonder if the Newcastle fans showing their arses over this takeover- as well as the totally disproportionate wailing from Arsenal fans after they lost to Brentford- might stem from a fundamentally skewed conception of what ‘pain’ is in football terms. If your club is highly likely to continue to exist regardless of where the team finish in the table this season, that puts you in quite a privileged position compared to fans of pretty much every club outside the top, I dunno, ten clubs in the pyramid.

While I predictably don't agree with all of this, it makes some persuasive and important arguments.

Personally my gut feeling is that certain people in Momentum's previous regime probably made such grandiose claims about the organisation's strength that have become an albatross. I know and very much admire a number of people on the current NCG and get the sense that they're basically fucking knackered from trying to turn around a proverbial oil tanker.

Can’t quite shake the sense that some of the people around Starmer get some kind of weird thrill from having him do stuff like write off the Sun. Hatred of the Sun doesn't necessarily correspond to politics- loads of people disdain it, and that disdain is often more a signpost towards a degree of decency than being left wing. Writing for the Sun signifies not pragmatism but cynicism or even amorality.

#SaintsFC fans calling for Ralph to go while maintaining that Semmens is a legend are same people who blame the teachers for their kids’ schools being shit, blame the doctors and nurses for the NHS being fucked and carry on voting Tory. You’ve got the club and the country you deserve, you thick bastards, and sadly the rest of us have to put up with it too.

It's been a pleasure to see so many tweets about how galvanising @TWT_NOW was, but I'd like to add that it was- from my POV anyway- also very generative in terms of new ideas and new/expanded projects. Particularly around culture and sport, there was a sense of the need for the left to broaden its scope and build a hegemonic project, and lots of people with lots of concrete ideas about how they can contribute to that.

Seeing a lot of this, and although it’s true, the bigger issue is that #SaintsFC are missing on-field partnerships developed over time, and Armstrong’s absence is only a part of that. #SaintsFC miss the relationship between Redmond and Bertrand. We miss the relationship between Ings and Adams. We miss the relationships S. Armstrong has with several players.
