According to ancient tradition, Jammu Rajya had a small beginning when Agnigir(also written Agnivaran) the younger son of King Sudarshan(who was 20th in decent in the line of Lord Rama of Ayodhya) migrated from Ayodhya to Shivalik Hills and reached the bank of river Ravi. He ruled there for long time. His son Vayu-Sharab extended his rule upto Ujh. Next in his line imp. ruler was Agnigarbh. He was very ambitious. He had 8 sons named: Bahu Lochan, Jambu Lochan, Arun Lochan, Kos Lochan, Ram Lochan, Hem Lochan Rupa Lochan and Surg Lochan.

Maharaja Ranjit Dev (1733-82)/(1728-1780) was one of the most outstanding rulers of Jammu. During his reign, Jammu made tremendous progress in socio-economic and political fields. He was a just and wise ruler. Under him many were attracted to Jammu and the town spread and ImageImage flourished. He made several social reforms which were related to adultery, female infanticide,interest demand(sud) and various superstitious practices. He adopted several measures which led to the establishment of social security in Jammu region. He abolished escheat system.
