In 1937, Jawaharlal Nehru agreed to cut down the national song “Vande Mataram” to appease sections of the Muslim community.

Lines invoking Durga, temples, and the spirit of Bharat Mata were removed, hoping it would make Muslims accept it.

But Spoiler: they still didn’t sing it. Nehru genuinely believed that removing the “Hindu” essence from the song would win over Muslim leaders and pacify the Muslim League. He couldn’t have been more wrong. Those same leaders continued rejecting even the truncated version.
