Not this one though (Much more become available on BMPT origins by now, so explanations starting from Grozny-1995 or Afghan war 1979-89 seem to be not quite correct)

This one:
Object 787 MBM (multipurpose combat vehicle) aka Gadyuka (Viper) ImageImageImageImage @thinkdefence BMPT in Russian stands for both Combat Vehicle to Support Tanks, and IFV Heavy. More than that, from (tank-centred?) point of view IFVs and other vehicles are doing tank support in one way or another.
Thus back in 1980s when Soviets started to develop HIFV, they called it BMPT
