Shafik says she condemns antisemitism and is committed to confronting it.

Experience since 10/7 says otherwise. #Columbia Shafik mentions Hamas — which an Israeli student told me she hadn’t on campus for a long time.

That is correct. Colleges don’t care. Jews and other Zionists have been stigmatized on college campuses and elsewhere. washingtonexaminer.com/politics/the-n…

Except it's not “extremely rude and disrespectful" to question an elected official's commitment to fighting antisemitism when they vote against a (largely symbolic) bill opposing antisemitism in a city where it's a big problem. forward.com/fast-forward/5… "A council member who abstained accused Jewish community leaders of failing to call out hatred against Palestinians and supporting apartheid in Israel."
Ah, injecting antisemitism into a discussion about why it's important to oppose antisemitism.

Will the people at this alternative Shabbat dinner be davening beforehand, and if so, will they be facing toward Jerusalem or somewhere else? dailyprincetonian.com/article/2023/0… Also, who exactly celebrates "Israeli nationalism over Shabbat dinner"-? Last I checked, Shabbat had nothing to do with Israeli politics.

So *now* campus antisemitism is a source of outrage? Where was Hochul when anti-Zionist students at NYU crashed pro-Israel students' Israel Independence Day party, burned an Israeli flag, and were generally so rowdy that NYPD arrested two of them back in 2018? nyunews.com/2018/04/27/jvp…

Dear America, Thursday marks the 4 year anniversary of the deadly attack on Pittsburgh's Tree of Life synagogue, which was followed exactly six months later by a deadly attack on Chabad of Poway, and two more deadly attacks in Jersey City and Monsey in December. Those things didn't pop up out of nowhere, which is to say -- things have been deteriorating for a while. Resurgent antisemitism in the US isn't new.

Wake up, America. And while we have you here, antisemitism is a multifaceted problem. It's not just the far-right.

"The 'substantial equivalency' regulations offer several options for New York’s private schools to prove their secular education is on par with instruction in public schools." Equivalent to the top public schools in NYS or the bottom schools in NYS? jta.org/2022/09/09/ny/… "Advocates for the yeshivas have already denounced the article, before its publication, as an attack on the Orthodox Jewish community." And anyone who's read NYT's coverage of Hasidim understands why.

"Levin, for his part, called AIPAC’s involvement 'a politics of domination, wherein AIPAC uses 'vast amounts of money to control or to prevent open space to have rational dialogue about Israel and Palestine.'” TFW you use antisemitic tropes to attack a pro-Israel group that's not supporting you, while emphasizing you're the Jewish candidate, and it's all reported uncritically.

This article was amazingly bad, even for NYT. First, let's just note that this article really muddies the waters. On purpose. For example, Edwards and Ivey are described as "two experienced, liberal lawyers," but if you read even NYT's evidence, Edwards is no liberal. She's leftward of there.

New York may be the country's most Jewish city , but its publicly-funded higher education system has been warped by antisemitism. My latest -- bit.ly/3PmfgEG If CUNY's Chancellor hadn't bailed the day before, it's hard to know how well he would've handled the City Council's questions. But the three CUNY employees he sent in his stead were stumped by a surprising number.

I vote based on which candidate shares my worldview. And I suspect the Jews in this district say the same. "In an era when his party’s left flank has grown increasingly hostile to Israel, his supporters contend that Mr. Nadler has used his position . . . to try to bridge more traditional Zionists and Israel’s progressive critics on issues like BDS and support for Israeli defense."

Don't confirm. Biden should pick someone diplomatic to be a professional diplomat. "'I regret that you would think that [my blatantly antisemitic take in an interview] was a problem,' Bagley told Cardin."

"In response, organizations like the Anti-Defamation League have ramped up their own efforts to crack down on Palestinian activism, which they claim is often only a thin veneer for antisemitism."
This sounds neither accurate nor like a news sentence. "It is harder, some say, to discuss actual instances of antisemitism when accusing anti-Zionists of being antisemitic is increasingly viewed as a conservative smear."
Anti-Zionists regularly engage in antisemitism. That's neither a smear nor conservative.

This afternoon, I read some more of Marc Weitzmann's _Hate_, which looks at 21st century French antisemitism, but everyone else may be interested in my review of the new Bambi translation. @DBashIdeas bit.ly/3xfGi9a The book, which was written 100 years ago, is nothing like the Disney movie of the same name. It's an allegory about Jewish life in Europe at the time. You sense the rising danger that led to the Holocaust not even two decades later.

Biden has a reputation for being a great friend to the Jewish community, but in response to last month's surge in antisemitism, he . . . put out a written statement on May 28. The statement is fine as things go, but the only named action is to turn things over to AG Garland. What's Garland doing? On May 27, he'd issued a memo about how DOJ will better handle all hate crimes going forward (a follow-up to his March directive on the subject).
