i've had some non-tech folks asking me about mastodon recently and whether they should sign up. many of you might be in the same boat tomorrow during thanksgiving.

my answer to them is no, i wouldn't sign up. not right now anyway. quick 🧵on why. first, the user experience isn't - IMO - ready for non-tech folks yet. from questions of "which server" to following people in different ways depending on which server they're on, it's intimidating for non-tech folks.

the "inmates running the asylum" objection indeed is one of if not the most common objections to the new kingmakers core idea of developer empowerment.

but development empowerment does not have to mean they can do "whatever they want and refuse to do anything they don't want." if we think of developer / practitioner empowerment as a pendulum, it spent several decades swung towards the "developers are fungible, fundamentally unimportant resources" end of the spectrum.

was helping a friend with a resume last night. his was in great shape, fortunately, and didn't need much from me, but i gave him the same spiel i give to everyone i help work on them anyway.

thought it might worth sharing here, so it's 🧵time. /1 most people - myself included, the last time i worked on my resume (it's been a while) - tend to look at resumes as itemized lists of our accomplishments and goals. /2

Shortest. Visit. Ever. my brother flew in on friday, and while his COVID test came back negative and my mom is past her second dose of the vaccine, we looked for a proper, socially distant outdoor outing and decided on a walk on the beach down at reid state park.

just realizing that i will not be able to watch the @RedSox spring training opener tomorrow here as planned due to @YouTubeTV’s disgraceful bait and switch of adding NESN to get me to sign up only to drop it later.

guess i’m going to a bar to wat-

oh. right. guess it’s back to mlb.tv in spite of *their* unfortunate decision to drop @Sonos support.

oh yeah, i can’t thanks to blackouts.

for those of you fortunate enough to be able to work from home amid the outbreak but without much experience in doing so, a few tips from someone who's been doing it for a long time. 1. routine is everything. most of us have one in an office, but at home the lack of structure may leave you more aimless. setting a routine is important. and what that routine actually is is much less important than sticking to it.

a thread on networking, because it's come up several times in my feed this morning and because it's something that totally baffled me when i started my career.

if you're unsure about the point of networking, this might interest you. 1/19 never, during my college or work experience, was "networking" ever explained to me. i'd never even heard the word until i graduated - though to be fair the fact that i worked construction in HS and college probably didn't help. 2/19
