Thread 🧵: Phoebe was not a "deaconess" [Rom 16:1]. She served the church as a faithful Christian benefactor. Paul defines the nature of her service in the immediate context with that of a "patroness", or lit. one who cares for others with her resources, in 16:2. 👇
Similarly, in Rom 16:3-4 Prisca and Aquila are listed as Gentile "fellow workers", not apostles. The offices of the church are important to keep within their proper spheres.
