Imagine philosophers who aren't prepared to debate about their views with anyone who disagrees with them! Goes against the definition of a 'philosopher', right? Oh no: here are some... iai.tv/articles/retra… And how do they defend their position? By accusing their philosophical opponents of holding views which they do not in fact hold: 'that transgender people are by definition mentally ill or delusional, and that respecting transgender people irreparably conflicts with

Having come back from holiday to repeated pestering from someone about the blog post 'Doing better in arguments about sex and gender', I think a response is required about why my co-authors and I are not too concerned about these criticisms. 1 For those of you unfamiliar, the original post - written with @boodleoops, @janeclarejones, @mary_leng, @Docstockk and @H_L_Smith_ is here.

Justin Weinberg @DailyNousEditor is not obligated to link to philosophical writing on his blog, but the reasons he gives dailynous.com/wp-content/upl… for not linking to @Docstockk's piece are not convincing. 1/ quillette.com/2019/04/11/ign… Most obvious is the claim that @Docstockk is scaremongering about statistics being collected according to self-IDed gender and not sex using the Scottish census as an example. Hmm... 2/

This thread is an excellent example of missing the point of an argument. The worry of @Docstockk and others is that we do not yet have evidence that transwomen are less likely to sexually assault females than men are (given that most trans women are still biologically male). 1 Women-only spaces exist as a protection for females from sexually assault and harrassment by men. That does not imply (and most men understand that it does not imply) that all men are likely to assault women. Yet all males are (without complaint) excluded from female spaces. 2

So: dogma is fine, and reasonable, evidence-based debate is hate speech? As a fellow philosopher, I'm horrified protestors are trying to threaten @Docstockk into silence. 1/5 I'm equally horrified that we can be expected not to debate 'truths' which are based on a specific account of kinds of people. The claim that 'transwomen are women' is based on a theory of gender, and more broadly or kinds, which is highly controversial however popular it is. 2/5
