So, today is the day when @marksandspencer opens its new 45,000 sq ft clothing and food store at the Galleries Retail Park in #Washington. M&S kindly invited me along for a sneak peek last night, and store manager Rob took time out to give me and the other guests a guided tour. Image Occupying the combined space of the former Peacocks, Outfit and New Look stores, the new M&S replaces the 8,000 sq ft Food Hall shop a few doors away (pictured), and is also - controversially - pitched as a replacement for the Sunderland city centre store that closed on Saturday. In recent days, stories on various local news websites have flagged places like #Plymouth, #Hull, #StokeonTrent and #Stockport as having the “highest number of empty shops”, according to a new survey. So, here's my take (a long thread). Let’s have a look at this in more detail, and do the one thing that often gets overlooked – scrutinising and interrogating the data on which these claims are based.
