All due respect to Dr Weir but I believe the Ukrainians will do pretty stunning things with Harpoons. A kludged-together land based Harpoon system is well within their capability, and the missile itself does most of the actual work. You don't actually need an active radar track to target a Harpoon missile strike. It's nice to have, but once the missile leaves the tube its little missile little brain is on it's own. It knows where to go to look for a target and how to attack it, and you can walk away.

Seeing a lot of accounts I'm blocked from now and honestly curious if it's my new warmongering or the curse word in my username I got a lot of followers over the years from anti-warmongering so it's totally understandable. I'm just sad auto blocking algorithms are such prudes.

In civilian terms, this is like going from a business requiring an MBA within 3 years of hire to one that prohibits employees under, say, 25 from getting an MBA at all. I was a huge fan of my last ship's ESWS program. We took it very seriously and unlike so many other training evolutions actually felt like it accomplished something.

When you have a ton of pills to take, do you swallow them: I have an epic-level gag reflex. Just putting a pill in my mouth, *knowing* that I'm about to try and swallow it, can set it off. Dental hygienist hate me because they can only work on my back teeth a few seconds at a time.

IMHO the US Navy has been suffering from two decades of capital depreciation and institutional neglect. Too much responsibility with (believe it or not) too small a force, coupled with an insidious tendency to turn the service into a Boat Army and a lot of R&D boondoggles. The Navy has not had a very clear goal for its R&D, largely because nobody has fought more than a skirmish at sea in over half a century. Most naval warfare is theoretical at this point.

I have thoughts on this and the Navy's war on sleep.

features.propublica.org/navy-accidents… The OOD of the Fitzgerald that night was a young lieutenant jg. She was responsible for the safe navigation of a two billion dollar warship at night through commercial sea lanes. She hadn't slept in 22 hours.
