how long has it been since you heard the term 'nanny state' applied to the United States?

please let me introduce you to "the pappy state." "the pappy state" is primarily driven by what pappy doesn't ever wanna hear about, and doesn't ever wanna talk about.

i looked up someone from my past today, after talking to my 17 yro daughter a bit. friend from my undergrad days :-)
another cellist. much better than me.
highly respected cardiologist now. went on from UW-Madison to Yale for med school, residency at UPenn. we laughed as my daughter and wife diagnosed me with envy. 😂
that wasn't quite it. i'm happy for all his success, and the people he's helped.

is there bitterness?
yeah. not bitter envy. bitter disappointment, i guess.
i am so frustrated at how i've failed to stay in touch.

i see someone with initials CO wants to know if the current hepatitis outbreak among children is plausibly related to Covid-19 vaccination.

NO. Any relation to the Covid-19 vaccination is not plausible. Verging on impossible.

2022 May 10
npr.org/sections/healt… «"The challenge is that the treatment for an abortion and the treatment for a miscarriage are exactly the same," said Dr. Sarah Prager, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Washington in Seattle and an expert in early pregnancy loss.»

When i walk around the office buildings where i work, i sometimes encounter mothers' rooms - to accomodate nursing of newborns, breastmilk pumping, and other activities.

that's cool. i feel like my workplace is fairly responsive to employee needs. but the mothers' rooms are a pretty new idea. a pretty recent response to employee needs. the need isn't new.
that's not a dig at my employer at all.

my sister passed the contents of this thread to me today, i relay them here in the hopes they are helpful to someone. Glazer/Artist

i don’t think it’s happened yet.
someday i’ll be in a twitter conversation with someone and i won’t quite be able to recall their profession… and i’ll assume they are a database pro.
i hope that isn’t cause for offense. i also assume people are no older than me, unless they are a medical doctor, professor, or lawyer. surprise me if they are younger than me.

no matter how many birthdays i’ve had, in comparison to other people internally i am 28 years old.

Having read the draft opinion from Justice Alito and the amicus brief from the United States… of course the the thing everyone should be thinking about and talking about is reproductive rights.
But also… The draft isn’t good.
it’s crap.
Justice Alito, did they give you “the villain talk?”
if the sentiments and argumentation in the draft drive the opinion as released, you’re going to be a villain.
Not just because i said so.
in fact, least of all because *i* said so.

trying to reproduce a system issue that presents itself in a complex ETL when run at full scale on a given system is tough.
but it’s a task i can do sometimes, and want to be able to do more often. it’s an important task bc attaching a debugger to production is risky. and extended events is of limited use when some system symptoms are known but query/worker/memory condition contributors aren’t.

i still can’t separate Bill Cosby from Cliff Huxtable.
doesn’t just keep me from watching the Cosby Show; keeps me from referencing some great scenes from the show i think many people my age know well.
that’s a shame, especially considering all the other talent & people involved. When Denise made Theo that “cool” shirt?! 🤣

the idea for today is to cause #sqlserver [total server memory] to exceed [target server memory] by several gb with a rowstore-only workload and *then* read columnstore segments into buffer pool (and column store object pool). while there are no columnstore related pages in bpool and columnstore object pool does not exist, the impossibly-high [target pages] value means almost no SQLOS free memory on the system.

meaningful use of a 3d graph (rather than stacked/layered/mixed line + area 2d graph) would be unlocking a whole new achievement for me. my imagination is so thoroughly 2d-based. i can imagine 2d objects in motion: waves, gears, spinning plates. But 3d is a problem for me.

i also wanna know if those mugshots were from this incident or priors 🤣

when do the stories people believe about a work of art, regardless of artist intent or history of the piece, become a part of the work of art?
i don’t know. working with a database engine, i’m an absolute stickler for “design intent” as revealed by documentation and historical development.

I’m watching “The Omega Code” which i knew beforehand would be awful.
rottentomatoes.com/m/omega_code i don’t understand why in the computer lab, two scientists speaking Russian are working on a program that displays an on-screen double helix and prints out sheets of paper with Hebrew and English words.
