The Information Age is over. We are firmly in the Disinformation age.

Automated AI-based/assisted non-information should be a *punishable crime* if we want to hold on to the bare minimum of a viable information sphere.
Toxic sludge is pouring into our world.

🧵 1/4 I've been pretty careful in my rhetoric when talking about AI, focusing almost entirely on legislating the ingestion of data for training. Because I think freedom of speech is important.

But I think collectively we will be harmed by the proliferation and casual use of LLMs.

Last night, two communities clashed.

An AI [re]generated image had won a Cover Art contest.

Artists quickly saw it was AI, but Authors were unconvinced: they wanted reasonable proof, not hearsay.

(Mark Lawrence, the host, has been nothing but gracious. Do not bother him)
🧵/? Many artists pointed out specific issues with the image: typical AI artefacts that come from image generation that a trained eye can easily see, but harder for a layperson to understand the significance.

Authors remained unconvinced: needed better proof.

While Sam Altman is fearmongering over godlike AI that could doom humanity or create utopia, the adults are talking in the other room.

Artists are asking for 3 simple things.
Permission. Credit. Compensation.

🧵1/5 The house Judiciary committee had their first hearing of many on Copyright and AI. Photography and music were represented (3 people), as well as 2 lobbyists for AI.

AI companies are using every argument they can to dodge these 3 pillars of copyright.

💸COMMERCIAL Machine Learning (AI) is rotten to the core in terms of respect for Copyright.

👁🤖I'm trying to track down the origins of datasets for things like motion tracking, object detection & general computer vision.

They almost ALWAYS lead to unlicensed Flickr images😠🧵 Visual graph going left to right, with three sections. Secti I can't find a Machine Learning product that properly licenses training data. If you know of any, send them to me! (This isn't about Image Generators, this is everything).

Every layer of dataset abstraction/annotation just further abstracts away the original rightsholders.
