Try the "anti-pitch" instead: STEP ONE - Ask about the person (responsibilities at work, etc.)

1 - Reiterate the goal / outcome
Say: "My understanding was [original goal]" or something similar

2 - Point out the inconsistency seems to suggest they want a *different* outcome
Say:"It seems this feedback note is pushing us to [different outcome]"
3 - Offer to be flexible if that's the case
Say: "If that's the case, I'd be happy to"
