my media knowledge class attended another college's zoom class today to learn about reconciliation in media and the speaker was talking about how we need to understand our own history and value it, even the difficult histories, to really get others to understand that history also
and they also mentioned having to change the education system with Indigenous youth so they can understand their real history also and without noticing, tears were Streaming down my face and i still don't know exactly why hhhhhhhh

it really isn't that hard to just refer to those groups by their original name. the word "eskimo" doesn't even originate from any of the spoken languages of the Indigenous groups that are often called eskimos lmao
although some don't mind being called eskimo, the word bunches together many northern Indigenous groups together making people think our various cultures are monolith.

just like how there are many different tribes with differences to each other even in the same region, it's the same for northern/arctic Indigenous people. not every region identifies as Inuk/Inuit or they don't use the same dialect/language.
also, stop treating every Inuk on this website like the "all-knowing Inuk" i'm still learning about my mom's dialect which is different to Iqaluit's dialect where i grew up, even in Nunavut, there are Inuit from different regions who would have large differences in some aspects..
