As Africans,we generally used to being alone economically without govt support. Trust me,plan ahead when moving to countries like UK, especially when they write "no recourse to public funds" on your visa. You are going to a country where your bills would be 20x and you are alone. Everything you need to clear your bills has to come from your productivity apart from what you get from home. Accommodation is your first big challenge, I will add some threads below on that.
On jobs, give yourself some time, and please network with as many people as possible.

I once told my barber in London that I was unemployed. He said the guy that stood up just now talked about construction. That was how I started my construction journey from labourer to Project Management

Pls don't panic if you move to the UK and you don't get a job in a few weeks The system is just getting to know you. Continue to tell everyone at every opportunity that you are looking. Call and register with as many agencies as possible.

Tell people in the Church, Mosque, barbershop and salon. You will be surprised as several doors will open.

People ask how I got a full tuition undergrad schorlaship to the USA then.I wrote SAT,got 1150 out of 1600.I got a scholarship from a college in Florida.Several of my friends also did.Thats around 20 yrs ago. Most are in multinational companies now. Access to Information is golden We used to comb the entire USIS and British Council for scholarships. The network effect of the Internet was not this big then. Today the Internet gives you everything. Don't be desperate about it.Just work on it on the side. As a young African, all options must be on the table🙏

When money is scarce, your journey will be rough but it turns you into a fighter.I started chasing scholarships as a 5 year old.Pressure was huge,I had to be first in class to retain it. I did till I left primary school. Then I got admitted in AFMS.10yr Mushin boy in army uniform🤯 Getting into AFMS was tough. Did written exam, practical interview where we travelled to Jos for some days, medical check up too.I was one of the three from Oyo State. The camouflage, khaki, and airforce gear was our school uniform.I was talk of the street anytime I step out of our

In your bid to Japa, be determined but not desperate. If you are desperate, people/agents will take advantage of you. You will find the following helpful.

1. Japa has different status. Some will give you the right to work, some will not. Be careful of visiting visas, cos you will have no right to work, you may exhaust the goodwill of your host and get stranded abroad. It is really not advisable.

I prefer student visas/ work visa, because it gives you resident permit. As a student,u will be able to work limited hours during school and full time during

There are two stages when you japa
1. The survival stage
2. The thriving stage
Your survival stage is always challenging, you are in a new country, give yourself time. The type of visa you have'll impact how challenging this period will be.This is why it is good to Japa correctly A student visa gives you limited hours to work during term time, if you are self funded or on a shoestring budget, it can be tough, days of just bread and milk, or beans on toast or managing with a friend. It is a phase that will pass with patience, perseverance, and grit.

Sitting for lunch at work with a Scottish,an English and Kiwi Engineer on one of Europe's biggest infrastructure project. When we are together,I ask deep questions, listen to their stories, family, education. How they got apprenticeship at 17,how a Kiwi comes to Britain to work and gain experience, how a Bulgarian used an EU scheme to become a carpenter now earning over £20/hr.An Irish PM had a young son that finished plumbing training n found work in Australia.Even Anthony Joshua was working as a bricklayer while chasing boxing. Education and skills remain

I had a very touching conversation this afternoon.A woman approached me on the street in London. She was going to an office that was 10 minutes away,so I used my Google maps to help her,I also told her to walk with me as I was walking her way. Then I got to know she's Nigerian... I told her I am Nigerian too.She is from Delta but married a Yoruba man. Her kids her in the UK.She looked in her 60s,as I was about to leave her, I requested to ask a question,I asked would she retire in Nigeria. She said she definitely would if security is good. So Buhari signed Executive Order 10, so that Local Govt will have their money direct and rightly so because, they are the closest to the people. Our governors took Buhari to courts😭😭 cos they want to be in charge but some are embezzling it. Ha!!!. These are serious issues 🥺🥺 So For example, Federal Government will give a Local Government N300m allocation, a State Governor can collect the money, give Local Government N100m, tell them to sign they received N300m. These are the reasons why Nigeria is not working. People are eating Haram! My God! 😭😭

About 20 years ago, I was sitting hopelessly at home in Mushin, a friend came to tell me I could get a scholarship abroad through the Internet. That information changed my life forever,I have worked for multinationals and travelled the world. All of that is possible for you too🙏 The information we have at our finger tips today, only used to be available to the rich and powerful. We have to take full advantage. Nobody is coming to help us in the trenches. Help your child in secondary school to prepare for SAT, there are undergraduate scholarships in USA

When a bank approved almost £200,000 loan 4 me to buy my property in London,I was shocked. How did I get here from the trenches of Lagos?
When you are abroad, don't forget to work on your credit score from day 1.Lack of credit access is one of d factors dat keep people in poverty In the West, you have to build your financial credibility bit by bit. No company wanted to give me a phone line on contract when I moved here, because they didn't know me.The first company that gave me credit only gave £100.Then I read about personal finance, and started applying

You should have your CAS by now.If you have not, please check with the school.A lot of schools are no longer accepting late resumption,so plan ahead, considering the holidays in December. I went into an interview to work for a Tier I UK Engineering company. They asked me the question,
"how good are you working under pressure?"

"I am the first child of an African family. I have been under pressure from day one.I went to a primary school my parents couldn't afford so I had to become first in class every term to keep the scholarship. My books were used to teach my siblings at home, they were out of school,so I couldn't afford to be 2nd in class

I didn't leave the compound before they phoned that I got the job

Remember to tell your story🙏

As I was buying my food,I saw this young man walked into the cafe in his full NHS regalia,I walked up to him,but he didn't recognise me,then I asked if he remembered the guy Image that cleans d toilet at a nightclub where he was a regular in his student days.He screamed "OMG!".He said "what do you do now?"I told him I now worked as a civil engineer. At that point I thanked God again dat I pushed through all struggles, including leaving school due to illness
