I went to summer camp only once. I was 11. When I stepped off the bus the girls from my cabin asked me to sneak into the boys cabin because I "looked like a boy." I felt so alone, so out of place, so awkward. I cried constantly that week & called home obsessively to talk to Sara.
She was so traumatized by my experience that she never went. The closest we ever came to summer camp again was camping with our family. Surrounded by our cousins who were musical and quirky like Sara and me, I felt like I could be myself.
