If you don't know Patrick: He was a technical fellow, which is the highest level an individual contributor at Microsoft can achieve. It's the equivalent of a VP position. Microsoft has very few Technical Fellows (last I checked ~50). Anders Hejlsberg and Mark Russinovich are TFs.

I think that is a very good point actually.

Academia has the luxury of studying problems in depth. A lot of the traditional comp sci subjects have usually multiple decades worth of research put into them.
