My birthday came a day early. @zeddotdev launched in Public Beta, which you can try here: zed.dev/download (please, it's my 🥳 tmrw)

This is my 7th Open Source deal memo, but the first I've written in a tool made by the team we backed!

1/8
Memo is not very good tbh. Rereading it now, it doesn't really capture our thesis.

Nathan is pure energy. He is building the future of code editors, and that was clear the moment he started talking. If anyone's going to to do it, it's this team. That's actually why we invested.

This bill might as well say it’s illegal to run a business with a low margin in California. If you want to tax the rich, tax the rich. Don’t ban entire categories of business in CA. Wealth created by low margin (fintech, marketplace, platform) businesses would be subject to CA’s enormous tax rate.

When companies leave, it won’t be greed, it will be literally required.

Dumb herd mentality VC: This will never work. Unity will just build it.

Smart game dev tools founder: If you had said that about AWS in 2012, you’d have missed Snowflake.

If you are smart game dev tools founder, DM me.

BTW here’s why dumb herd mentality VC is wrong. 👇 Unity is one of the greatest things to happen to game dev, possibly ever. It massively lowers the barriers to entry for creating real games.

There’s a whole category of developers who learned to code with Unity/C# as their first language! F’ing amazing!!

My contrarian opinions (among VCs) about the Dev Tools space: (1/many)

In the spirit of strong opinions, weakly held... 👇 * You can’t “just” build a dev platform on top of your successful SaaS business’s. It’s a different customer and more importantly a different user.

My only question is why the Picard family vineyard switch from VSP trained vines to the Guyot system between TNG episode “Family” and this series. As LaBarre is in Bourgogne, I’d have expected Guyot the whole time, but why switch? Also, the label on the Chateau Picard states that it’s Gran Cru Classé. Are we expected to believe the AOC granted Gran Cru Classé status to a village in fucking LaBarre? This stretches the limits of fantasy in this science fiction series.

So do you really think exited founders of billion dollar companies who are now VCs virtue signaling about “hustle porn” got there on 40 hour weeks? If so, stop reading. Not really a stretch to say this new branding on work-life balance is a way to signal “founder friendliness.” Which hey, good on you. Coining a term and getting it to spread quickly is hard.
