The biographer of Hakīmul-Ummah Ml. Ashraf Alī Thānwī رح, Khwaja Azizul-Hasan Mazjūb relates that Mawlana Thānwī was not engrossed in studying random books (for personal interest) except for one book/genre that he was very fond of— the biographies of the saintly scholars. Khwaja Sahib writes that the one book that Hakīmul Ummah رح was extremely fond of was the “Tabaqāt al-Kubrā” of Imam al-Sherānī رح

• Mawlana Jalaluddīn Rumi’s advice to seekers/carriers of knowledge

این روا و آن ناروا دانی ولیک
تو روا یا ناروایی بین تو نیک

“This is lawful” & “that’s unlawful” you know very well,

But are you (doing what is) lawful or unlawful, see this O good one! آن اصول دین بدانستی ولیک
بنگر اندر اصل خود گر هست نیک

You have come to learn the Usūl of Dīn however
Look into your own Usūl, if it is righteous

*Advice for students of sacred knowledge

When undertaking the journey for sacred knowledge, be ready to make necessary adjustments to life.

Zuhd (abstinence & worldly aloofness) is a necessary component for the light & blessings of knowledge to enter the heart. @Duaseminary When seeking sacred knowledge, we shouldn’t expect the light & blessings of knowledge to enter the heart when we’re not ready to give up evil habits.

Sayyidunā Ibn ‘Atā’illah رح said:

الفاقات بسط المواهب

“Impoverishments are the spreads of Divine gifts…”

In other words, the more rely upon Allah Ta’ala…

The more we call upon Him…

The more we show destitution to Him…

The more we shall receive His Divine gifts. The biggest problem in the western world is our *over-reliance* upon technology, our wealth, our smarts, our supposed modern advancements.

We are blinded by this hubris, of the One Who is really in control.

A young man I know complained to me that he’s stressed out & frustrated.

I told him that if what you’re reading or viewing on social media/internet is nothing but sinful, backbiting, slander, and cringeworthy material, then maybe it’s time you need to cut it out from your life. After a couple of weeks, he came back and said that he had never felt better.

He also said, “I never realized how much what we see and what we read can affect our mental states. I realized this only after leaving social media for a couple of weeks...”

When you dedicate some time daily dhikr (to remember Allah) you attain a kind of joy that is inexplicable. The greatest enjoyment that can ever be experienced by a human being is that which is attained through Allah’s dhikr. All the other joys in the world are temporary. #sulūk Allah Ta’ala mentions in a Hadith Qudsi, “He who remembers me to himself, I remember him to Myself...” What bounty can be greater than this special remembrance of Allah?
