One of my favorite sayings of the desert fathers. From Abba Benjamin:

"Walk in the royal way, measuring the landmarks without meannness."

I think about this one often. To me it is a call to pay attention to the events of my life, and of the world around me with the eye of love. It is easy to rush to anger or fear or judgment concerning the things that happen to us and around us. But Benjamin calls us to a different way. To "measure the landmarks without meanness."

Far too often we decide ahead of time what a thing is, what it means, or what it will be.
