Meanwhile, right as I walk into the gym in my apartment building, ESPN blasts the news on SportsCenter that Sophia Smith has signed a new two-year deal with the Portland Thorns:

#BAONPDX #NWSL Image .@sophsssmith says:

“I’m excited to call Portland home and extend my time with the Thorns. The support from the fans, city and club have been tremendous and I’m looking forward to being a part of its next chapter.”

Absolute, utter shock. This news will hurt me and a lot of other people for a long time to come. You will not find two people of more integrity in a commitment to each other for life than Grant and Céline. Prayers to you and your family. All of us who worked with Grant will carry his memory for the rest of our time in our profession and our sport.

Might just be the biggest goal of Neymar's life. And what a goal it was, too.

Oscar Tabárez could also go on this list from the recent past, even though he's at this World Cup.

And anyone out there (Henry aside, he already knows) is welcome to look up how much "major international experience" Lionel Scaloni had before getting the Argentin a job. A coach who can build chemistry on short notice, have a good tactical sense, and think fast on their feet when needed is probably going to be good at the job.

Doesn't mean I think Berhalter should get a second term. (I don't).

But nor is it good to insist on too much principle.

Here’s what the line to get into the #MyPLMorning fan fest in Philadelphia looks like 20 minutes before the gates open: Adam Bekhet (left) and Ricky Rocha (right) from Richmond, Va., were the first people in line - at midnight.

Bill Kline (center) from Trappe, Pa., was next to arrive at around 1 a.m.

Soccer is boring, they said while watching a NFL game between two of the league’s historically biggest teams with a grand total of one field goal on the scoreboard at halftime.

(But it’s 3-0, so!) “3-0 with one kick, you’ll never sing that.”

New from me:

A candid conversation with former Philadelphia Independence player @JoannaLohman, who played for Paul Riley here and with Sinead Farrelly at two clubs.

On what Lohman saw then but didn’t know how to recognize, and what she sees now:

inquirer.com/soccer/paul-ri… Image I very much appreciate Joanna Lohman’s candor and willingness to speak out.

She is one of a few former Independence players with whom I’ve kept in touch over the years (though there aren’t many).

And I know fans still remember her time here fondly.

ESPN reports that its MLS broadcasts this year averaged 343,000 viewers.

That is English and Spanish combined, with games across ABC, ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes.

A 16% increase from last year, and the league's best season on ABC/ESPN networks since 2007. No surprise that the top five audiences of the year were all games on ABC.

Maybe a surprise about the No. 1 game: Minnesota vs. Portland on July 30, 593,000 viewers.

It's the @PhilaUnion's turn to be featured in @PhillyInquirer's Philadelphia Sports Icons series.

So, a question: Who is the most important player in team history?

I say it's @andreblake29.

inquirer.com/soccer/a/union… ImageImageImage How can a team’s all-time icon be someone who’s still playing? Philadelphia sports tradition dictates that an icon must be known only from the past.

But Andre Blake's impact here really has been that profound:

How can the Athlete Council expel Seth Jahn for his bigoted remarks?

I can't answer the question of *when* or what kind of meeting it would take. But I think I can lay out the pathway in the following thread. 1. The Athlete Council's official Policies and Procedures document spells out how a member can be removed.

From today’s USSF AGM, here on the record is how the votes are split on the Pro Council.

Now you see why @THEChrisKessell has been pushing for men’s and women’s leagues of the same division to have the same number of votes. If you’re wondering why UWS, NPSL, etc. don’t have votes on the Pro Council, well, it is the Pro Council.

What will happen if the UWS-NISA D2 women’s league gets off the ground is an interesting question.

More on that here: inquirer.com/soccer/nisa-un…

Just jumped into PACER too, to see what's there. I see a lot of redacted and sealed evidence. A lot of this filing is using other cases to justify this case, which is what a lot of legal filings are.

UCLA men’s soccer coach Jorge Salcedo is in this. Let's make this a thread.

"On or about July 7, 2016, CW-1 directed a payment of $100,000 from one of the KWF charitable accounts to a sports marketing company controlled by Salcedo."
