BREAKING: A Tesla battery material supplier has topped the list of human rights abuses, for the second year in a row. Tesla buys cobalt and nickel from Glencore, a mining giant with at least 70 allegations of human rights abuses against it. 🧵
theverge.com/2023/6/15/2376… Last year we reported that although Elon Musk claims Tesla is so green, the reality is different.

Tesla's supply chain is actually filled with both environmental and human rights abuses. /2

Biden has approved the Willow Project in Alaska.

Moving ahead with this project will lead to massive, dangerous amounts of carbon pollution.

The harm to people and the planet cannot be overstated. 🧵 Willow will be the largest new oil project on U.S. public lands.

The emissions will be the equivalent of 56 million cars driving for one year, or nearly 70 coal fired power plants operating for one year. /2

As we examine the world-wide fascist movement, from Italy to the United States to Brazil, one thing we must understand is that fascism succeeding means environmental devastation. And we can’t allow that to happen. Thread 🧵 No one makes this clearer than fascist President Jair Bolosonaro of Brazil. Under his reign deforestation of the Amazon has reached 15 year highs, a level of destruction that harms the entire planet. /2

An environmental and colonial disaster is unfolding in a U.S. colony in the Pacific. Right now, on Guam, hundreds of acres of forest are being destroyed by the U.S. military for a massive live-fire training complex. 🧵 As part of a years-long, $8 billion scheme to relocate 5,000 marines from Okinawa to Guam, the U.S. military, which already has two massive bases on Guam and controls 25% of Guam’s land, five live-fire training ranges in this huge complex. /2

Nihilism around climate, around our collective future, is one of the enablers of fascism. As Mariame Kaba has often said, "hope is a discipline." And we must practice that discipline now more than ever. Here's a little on why, and how.🧵 Giving in to despair at this pivotal moment enables fascism in multiple ways. The first is that apathy often means tuning out of politics and organizing, allowing the right the seize power. /2

Under Israeli occupation and blockade, less than 4% of fresh water is drinkable in Gaza. 🧵 Approximately 96% of the water in Gaza is unsafe to drink, because the only freshwater aquifer is contaminated by sewage and seawater, or depleted by settlers’ over-extraction. More than 25% of all reported disease in Gaza is linked to poor water quality and lack of access. /2

Breaking: A new study by the University of Hawaii confirms that the U.S. Navy has been lying, claiming that the water under Red Hill, used by 90,000 people and 8 elementary schools, is clean, when it is in fact still contaminated by jet fuel and harming local residents. 🧵 For months, since the Navy said back in March that the water is now free of jet fuel, residents and organizers have continued to report rashes and illness, and they have been ignored. /2

Climate crisis news is non-stop this week, and more and more folks are asking: “What can I do?!” But in the West the approach to preparation is so clouded by individualism that we need to talk about communal preparedness for this crisis. 🧵 A lot of people think preparing for the climate crisis means a bunker full of canned beans, a bunch of guns and ammo, and some bottled war, but that won’t help you survive long in a worst case scenario. By now you’ve heard what’s happening in O’ahu. The Navy’s fuel storage at Kapūkakī (Red Hill), is leaking, and contaminating the aquifer that provides water to thousands of people. But you might not know what you can do to help, so here’s a thread. 🧵 First, you can go support @oahuwaterprotectors, @SDRHMutualAid, @Kiai_Report, and @aina_momona. Follow the lead of these indigenous organizers fighting to protect the water. /2

There’s a massive story unfolding in Atlanta, but it’s barely getting any media attention. Right now the city’s forest, a vital site for humans and animals alike, is under attack, and some amazing people are fighting back. Here’s the story. 🧵 Local governments and private developers are trying to cut down the Atlanta Forest to build a 300 acre police training compound and a $250 million soundstage complex using public land. /2

This Memorial Day we wan to uplift the struggle to demilitarize U.S. colonies. We must stop deploying U.S. soldiers to oppress people in the Caribbean and the Pacific. We must free the land and free the people. 🧵 First, we must all stand in solidarity with the native peoples of Hawai'i, struggling against U.S. militarism and its pollution of their water. We uplift @oahuWP and urge everyone to support their fight. 2/7

So one of the claims Elon Musk makes again and again, in between breaks to post memes, is that he's a good guy because Tesla is so green. But, like most of his claims, he doesn’t back this up. Here's the truth (🧵!) The 1st thing to understand is that Tesla doesn’t disclose its emissions. In fact they’re so bad at transparency that in 2017 an initiative to assess companies transitions to a low-carbon economy literally gave them a score of 0. (/2)

Eucalyptus trees are symbols of colonialism (a thread) Nearly 150 years ago, white colonists planted Eucalyptus trees all over the world.  While they had various reasons for their frenzy of planting––their perceived beauty, their potential as a fast-growing fuel resource, —
