(Not) FUN FACTS: Filipino kids of the 2000s may recall that they had to pay a fine or receive punishment for speaking a non-English vernacular language in school. By 2006 DepEd Order 36, only Filipino and Socio-Civics classes were taught in Filipino languages.
In 2003, then Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo issued Executive Order 210, in order to prepare the economy for technology-based jobs. Her economic strategy hinged on increasing foreign investment and the export of Filipino labor.

This was the story of my mom and dad, Rita Hans-Maclang and Reynaldo Laurente Maclang.
My dad passed away a few days later, in the morning after I told him he had done his duties as a father, and he told me he was proud of me.
I will forever be grateful for the hardworking (read: overworked!) people of PGH, for foregoing the fear of this deadly virus and flocking to aid the sick. This pandemic is not a blessing to anyone. But our medical frontliners definitely are gifts from God.
