Grateful for this call to Black-Asian solidarity from Michael Eric Dyson. The reference to S.I. Hayakawa caught my eye, as Hayakawa is best known to folks in Asian American studies as a vocal opponent of the student activism that created ethnic studies. (thread) Hayakawa was, as the Stevie Wonder song says, a prominent academic, but made his political name by trying to crush the Third World student strike as president of SF State in 1968-69. He became nationally famous by climbing on a protester sound truck to rip off the wires.
