Caterpillar cakes, ranked.
/THREAD/
1/ Colin the Caterpillar - M&S

The OG. Simple, effective, nice mix of white and milk chocolate topped with smarties.
2/ Cecil the Caterpillar - Waitrose

I like the rice paper eyes and the white chocolate stripes are a nice touch, but the proportions are just a bit off. Dumpy.

MHRA / JCVI presser: Jonathan Van Tam says he is about to announce "a change in course, a course correction to the UK programme."
Under 30s will be offered vaccines other than AZ.

This is *more cautious* than the EMA recommendation to continue on with all age groups that we heard just minutes ago.
MHRA/JCVI: More work is needed to confirm if the vaccine has caused these very rare side effects.

Scenes right now on the steps of @SeneddWales ๐Ÿ‘‡
Hordes of people drinking drinking with chants โ€˜open the pubsโ€™ Iโ€™m told.
Griff from Cardiff who is attending the event explained it by saying: โ€œDrakeford shuts the pubs...we get pissed at his houseโ€

BREAK: New guidance published today by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) will see the Union flag flown on UK Government buildings every day.
Easily the most handsome flag in the world.

Up there with Japan and maybe Switzerland. Much nicer than the US flag which let's face it is a vexillological mess.
Currently, Union flags are only required to be flown on UK Govt buildings on designated days.

New guidance will ask the flag be flown all year round, unless another flag is being flown โ€“ such as another national flag of the UK, a county flag, or other flags to mark civic pride.

Looking forward to the census results revealing just how many Brits actually feel european as a primary *national identity*.

Does anyone seriously think itโ€™ll be higher than 0.1%?
I think most Brits who feel โ€˜europeanโ€™ do so in the same way we feel feel โ€˜progressiveโ€™ - as a social signifier, not a national identity.
Saying โ€˜I feel europeanโ€™ is not a pledge of allegiance to Ursula von der Leyen, or the twelve starred flag.

Itโ€™s overwhelmingly a social indicator, not a political one.

Nicola Sturgeon likes to suggest that Scotland would be better off with its highest level of Government resting in Brussels rather than Westminster.

Shall we put that to the test with a topical example?
๐Ÿ’‰Say... vaccinations?๐Ÿ’‰

First daily vaccine data (just for England, mind) - 2,333,764 doses administered as of yesterday.

With Scottish, Welsh, and NI figures to add it's easy to see how this surpasses 2.4 million. Image
Looking forward to seeing this soar ๐Ÿค“ Image

This pandemic is exposing the fundamental problem with our current devolution settlement. No one can answer the fundamental question of Who Governs with any consistent hierarchy. It's a mess.
Council leaders and metro mayors have a pulsating bully pulpit, engorged on and off by a government implying it has to cut deals to exercise the power it already has.
Meanwhile the lower leaders of devolved nations are acting as rivals to the national executive- unwitting beneficiaries of unprecedented power accidentally falling their way in a hurried muddle.

So keen to flex their newfound power, they strive for difference for the sake of it.

All eyes on the Commons, Gove on his feet in a couple of minutes with a big Brexit update...
Barnier gaslighting here - understand EU are refusing to properly intensify or discuss legal texts.
Gove tells the commons that "as things stand" an FTA "will not now happen".

Hi @Otto_English I see youโ€™re quite tweeting me a fair bit.

Hope you wonโ€™t mind if I have some questions for you.
You seem to think there are implications of sharing a platform with people, and how that (in your view) gives them legitimacy:

So why were you sharing a platform with โ€˜sex pestโ€™ Hardeep Singh Kohli, who was sacked by the BBC for bad behaviour, a few weeks ago?

hilarious how people who are all 'yaas Jacinda' are the same ones who were wetting themselves over treasury predictions that GDP growth would be lower if the UK leaves the EU without a deal.

make up your minds.
it's almost as if most opposition to Brexit isn't borne of sober analysis of the facts but feel-good crowd-following us-vs-them Oblonskyism.

Jeremy Corbyn's record on climate change is actually filthy.
He bloody loves coal. So much so that he called for it to continue to be used, as did a group of his MPs just last year.

This morning every MP has received one of these weird butterfly tags, accompanied by a newspaper cutting of a word seemingly specific to them. Not creepy at all.
also accompanying the butterflies are weird Lexit paragraphs, conspiratorially attacking "financial companies", "moslem countries", and Israel.
Randomly name-checked figures include Vince Cable and the BBC's Norman Smith.

If you think the mild reduction in the pace of growth of spending in the UK was austerity, can't wait to see how you'd describe Greek budget measures...
Just for some context, this graph shows the 'austerity' the UK went through.
(Forecast data is slightly out of date - expenditure is actually 818bn this year, 30bn more than is shown on the graph)
... and here is the austerity that Greece went through.

So someone on #BBCQT was shouted down for saying the UK is one of the least racist societies because he is white. Let's look at the data rather than the anecdotes, shall we? 1/
2/ The U.K. has the least unfavourable view of Muslims of any European country polled by Pew.
3/ The U.K. is consistently more comfortable with interracial relationships than most european countries.
