(1/n) A few years ago, my then-girlfriend and I were having lunch together, and she asked me out of the blue what the saddest, most tragic event in history was.
I thought for a while, then said, "What happened to the Empress Wanrong was pretty bad."
(2/n) Wanrong was the wife of Puyi, the final Emperor of the imperial China. Both Puyi and Wanrong were Manchu nobility, the Manchus being a semi-nomadic people to the north whose conquest of China had started the Qing Dynasty.
