So, #BoycottDisney is trending because some Disney executive was caught on video saying that sometimes Disney prefers to not cast white guys in certain roles. Naturally, the poor sad white people are going ballistic.

Let's break this down, shall we? In the last few years, Disney has released the following movies, in reverse order:

- Inside Out 2, starring Tony Hale and Lewis Black, both white guys
- Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, starring Owen Teague and Kevin Durand, both white guys

Some folks believe it's a moral outrage that anyone prefers the infinite free entertainment options at their fingertips over going to the movies.

I have yet to be convinced that that belief is anything more than yet another example of bitter old people bitching about new stuff. "But Lawrence of Arabia isn't as good on a small screen!"

Yeah, and? I'm sure Jenny Nicholson's Starcruiser video wouldn't be as good on a big screen either. Different pieces of media work better on different formats.

When Ron DeSantis was on his anti-Disney "Don't Say Gay" bullshit a couple years ago, I often challenged his supporters to explain exactly WHY they saw a link between teaching kids that LGBTQ+ people exist, and grooming those kids.

None of them ever could. In this Bill Maher segment, he very similarly conflates child predators with LGBTQ+ people - opening with the former to get you good and angry, then closing with the latter to subconsciously SUGGEST a link between the two that he never actually explains.

So. Disney's Wish.

Sigh.

If I could describe Wish in one word, that word would be...compromised. At every turn, it feels like a deeply, DEEPLY compromised movie. One of the most admirable aspects of the last decade or so of Walt Disney Animation Studios' feature film output - the Jennifer Lee era, if you will - is the studio's costant drive to make their movies actually be ABOUT something underneath the usual Disney glitz and glitter.

Y'know, when you think about it, there was really no way the switch from physical media (and even paying for piecemeal titles on-demand) to the prevalence of monthly-subscription streaming services was ever gonna be a smooth transition. In a way, it's the equivalent of a grocery store chain suddenly saying "pay us a flat monthly fee and you get to take all the food you want."

Now, don't get me wrong, that system is GREAT for the consumers. Which is why it's become so popular.

I was never a devout believer or anything, but what destroyed any hint of religion for me was the combination of getting REALLY into George Carlin, Douglas Adams and Penn & Teller all around the same time in my high school/college years. Beneath the jokes, their arguments for atheism were just way too compelling to ignore, and made way too much sense to me.

lol ratio indeed, adam. lol ratio indeed.

After my adorable little kerfuffle with Megan in the DMs, we both tweeted screencaps of it. She scolded me (and the entire left for some reason) for not declining her offer politely enough to her liking. I just said "this felt good." So far her tweet's gotten 129 retweets (about a third of which are quote-tweets, and about half the quote-tweets negatively criticize her) and less than a thousand likes.

And, not that it's a competition, but even though she has more than 7x as many followers as me...

One of the many awesome things about the reception to this is how many conservatives - many of whom claim they hate the left for having too many uptight "wokescolds" - turned into sputtering monocle-shattering "how DARE you!" prudes over a joke about the female orgasm. Not to keep harping on this, but it's interesting that Basham got SO offended by this when, until she started complaining about it and outright LIED about me, I didn't even really attack HER personally.

Well, you look like you're too ashamed to show us what you look like. And yet, despite your insistence, I don't.

Does that bother you? You seem pretty easily bothered.

I didn't know the first one was a woman, sorry about that.

The second one was arguably over the line, and I apologize for that one too...but I notice it's from over a year and a half ago.

That's all you could find, huh? Two unrelated tweets, fifteen months apart, one of which wasn't even intentional.

And after treating it as SUCH a self-evident fact that "he calls women the B-word." After hyping it up as such a HABIT of mine.

Calling people "despicable scumbags," "soulless demons" and "evil to the core" doesn't strike you as gross and violent? I didn't say anything NEARLY that dehumanizing.

Oh but I did make a "wet" joke about Ben Shapiro's wife, yeah that's totally way worse. See @megbasham, THIS kinda shit, THIS right here is why people like me don't bother with "cordial disagreement" with the likes of you.

You lie, and when shown proof of your lies, you lie some more. ImageImage

An adult human with the gender identity most commonly associated with the female sex.

Is preserving the definition of that one five-letter word REALLY more important to you than preserving family? "Family is worth preserving over all else," says the guy who'd apparently rather preserve the definitions of a handful of words.

Please elaborate - if a family member who was assigned male at birth came out as a trans woman with a new name, which name and pronouns would you use when referring to that relative? My point here is that NOT EVERYONE WOULD.

If you would, good on you. That means you have a base level of respect for your family's feelings and you're willing to sacrifice a modicum of your personal comfort for the sake of theirs.
Dec 26, 2022 4 tweets 2 min read
If you think anyone who takes a hard stance on trans rights is an extremist, then why would you want to spend the holidays with extremists anyway, Darren?

Is it because you have no one else? Weirdly enough, I don't like spending holidays with people who routinely fling insults at me.

Do you insult your family as well?
Dec 26, 2022 4 tweets 2 min read
Oh come now Darren, I don't see the need for personal insults. I don't know you, and I have absolutely no control over what your family does at the holidays.

And yet, something about my words clearly frightened you, or you wouldn't have responded. Why so frightened? When you support a party that actively legislates against your grandchild's very existence, why would the parents of said grandchild let you spend Christmas with them? What makes your feelings more important than theirs?
Dec 26, 2022 6 tweets 2 min read
wild idea maybe conservative boomers should see the grim specter of spending christmas without their children as an incentive to NOT be hateful pieces of shit?

just a thought seems pretty simple to me

if you can't accept your gay and/or trans granchild, you don't get to see them at christmas

if you trust ben shapiro and jordan peterson over your own family, you get to spend christmas listening to shapiro and peterson instead of your family

...Where the fuck did this come from?

When did I ever bitch about a movie having Latino representation? When did you make a joke about a movie I love? It feels like you're referencing a prior conversation that I don't remember having.
