1/ In 1951, Solomon Asch seated one real participant in a room full of actors. Everyone insisted a short line was longer. Roughly three quarters of the real subjects went along at least once, with their own eyes open. 2/ That result is famous. The part people skip is what it implies about ordinary life. The wrong answer did not arrive as an order. It arrived as a social fact: everyone else already agreed.
