I've been studying a sales letter everyday for the last few weeks by writing them by hand.

Been doing this to break down what made them work.

By doing this, I hope other copywriters, DR marketers and sales & marketing enthusiasts learn something.

So, here's what I noticed: I'll start with To People Who Want To Write But Can't Get Started by the Newspaper Institute of America.

As at the time of Jesus' death, even after walking the length and breadth of Israel for 3 & a half years, he mostly had just a small core following - 11 disciples and a few friends here and there, like Lazarus, and his sisters.

Even the affluent ones like Nicodemus and... ...and Joseph of Arimathea were low key.

So, how did one of the greatest group explosions occur?

How did the early Christians get up to 3,000 & 5,000 people to join them at once on two different days?

What Made It Work?

How did they carry out one of the greatest...

Look at Gary Halbert's letters, ad campaigns for Old Spice, Charmin, KFC, Dollar Shave Club, Aviation Gin.

Look at how Bundesliga/Football Twitter (Leverkusen especially) admins interact on here.

Humour sells. The key is using it well. Saying humour doesn't sell is like saying comedians don't get laid.

Kevin Hart, Eddie Murphy, Basketmouth, Dave Chappelle, Steve Harvey etc, have dated & married some of the hottest women alive.

Even when some of these men don't look particularly remarkable.

I had noodles for breakfast at the office this morning.

As much as I've never been a big fan of noodles, I'm thinking about how far we've come as Nigerians eating noodles.

You see, Nigerians had never eaten noodles before Indomie came in.

They even accused the Indians... ...of trying to feed them worms.

And it was a serious struggle for Tolaram (makers of Indomie) to sell it to us.

Are you really a good person, or do you do good to others because your religion asks you to?

Or out of a sense of empathy?

Or to court public opinion, maybe?

Or better yet, because you're scared of going to hell someday? Do you hold yourself to the same standards you put other people under the microscope for?

Do you still say nobody is perfect when someone wrongs you?

Or does it only pertain to you when you are wrong?

A question most of us DR people don't ask when we are creating copy is "What is going on in the world that is influencing or might influence & shape the decision making by our prospect?"

This is why most copy falls flat because we try to copy & recycle old sales messages... from back in the day that were speaking to issues prevalent at the time.

Plus, some of the adjectives and language you think would elicit certain reactions in your prospect's mind have either been overused or irrelevant at the moment.

Case in point, RELEVANCE!

I love how you can take ideas from one language and use it in another.

For example, The Spanish phrase for "on-sale" is "en oferta", which loosely translates to "on offer" in English.

It clearly shows how putting something on sale means putting out an offer. This means anyhow you choose to play around or avoid it, the first and most important thing about any sale is THE OFFER.
