i feel a little suspicious of the messaging around schools that says that kids don't care about school/grades/punishments/college, don't want to learn, don't care about attending, only care about their internet life, and that this is a massive break with prior school culture like i agree that ipads from birth are clearly destructive to kids' ability to learn and pay attention in classroom settings. i just wonder whether the 'uncaring' child is being contrasted with a previous 'caring' child who was actually a successfully disciplined one

this is partly accurate but misses a) the massive popularity of books by women about men, especially gay men, and b) the fact that while men historically have a problem reading women, women haven’t had the same issue reading men there is a really interesting matrix around class and race and age, and about what narratives are endorsed by the publishing company, and the reasons that bears fruit or doesn’t. there’s a whole different prestige economy around established male authors vs the debut craze
