this is kind of a maddening column, and shows that perhaps @benyt didn't read the letter as closely as he should have, though he does mention that one of its points "requires a pretty careful reading." What level of inattention should have been presumed? What I find particularly frustrating, and yes, not more than a little gaslighty, is the insistence from major media figures that of COURSE Donohue's gesture COULD NOT have been anything bigotry-related, and that even wondering otherwise is "bonkers"/"nutso"/leftism run amok.
