🧵 In 1816, the Tambora volcano in Indonesia erupted, causing a "Year Without a Summer" due to the resulting volcanic winter. Food shortages were widespread, and global temperatures decreased by 0.4–0.7°C.

The explosion was heard on Sumatra island, more than 2,600 kilometres (1,600 miles) away and possibly over 3350 km (2060 miles) away in Thailand and Laos.
The Tambora eruption was rated as a 7 on the Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI), the largest ever recorded. It had an explosion equivalent to 800 megatons of TNT, compared to the most powerful atomic bomb ever detonated at 50 megatons.

Cyclone Chido has devastated Mayotte, a small island in the Indian ocean with gusts of at least 226 kilometres per hour and has "completely destroyed" the territory's many shantytowns. Provisional death toll is 14 with over 200 injured but that is expected to rise.

UPDATE: A massive fire has engulfed a 14-story building in Valencia's El #Campanar neighborhood in Spain since approximately 5:30 PM.

Fire crews are working to rescue at least two individuals trapped on a balcony while flames surround them. One person has jumped from the first floor onto a mat deployed by emergency services, but their condition is unknown.

A field hospital has been set up nearby, and at least two firefighters have been injured. The President of the Generalitat Valenciana, Carlos Mazón, is monitoring the situation.

Emergency services have urged people to stay away from the area to facilitate firefighting efforts.

The fire has spread to another adjacent building, and firefighters continue their rescue operations.

The Generalitat Valenciana has requested that the UME (Military Emergency Unit) be mobilized in the fight against the fire in #Valencia. Two firefighters with burns and smoke inhalation were taken to La Fe Hospital, a man to the General Hospital, a woman and a man to Doctor Peset Hospital, and a minor to 9 de Octubre Hospital, all due to smoke inhalation.

Devastating scenes from Chile this morning. Fires continue to burn with more evacuations ordered. Death toll so far is 19 with 28 injuries and 212 people unacounted for. 😭
