@matterspattern1 @S_Coughlin_DC @thepalmerworm In any event, returning to the question (without going point by point on the above), it helps to look at things for a second from an Islamic perspective -- Aristotle was transmitted by Christians to Islam, became a standard tradition in some schools of Islam, and then to the West @matterspattern1 @S_Coughlin_DC @thepalmerworm The Latin West blended two traditions -- see the 'Old Logic' (first to books of the Organon) and the sudden translation (from Arabic) in the age of Aquinas (the New Logic) -- Via Antiqua and Via Moderna generally.

Here's the Islamic side: home.uchicago.edu/~jtr/Aristotel…

Well, 'my corner' is technically Thomistic Philosophy, moderate Realism in the sense of Scholasticism and Aristotle, and Post-Keynesian Economics which is probably not what you are addressing. But I will mark this to make a :thread: and discuss any concerns about the above. First of all, if anyone wants ask 'what is an Orthodox Christian doing, talking about Thomism...' (especially Orthodox Christians...) I'll point you to Gennadios Scholarios, the Patriarch on whose desk the 1453 conquest of Constantinople landed... amazon.com/Greek-Thomist-…

Reminder to myself to respond to this important request when I get time, later today. I can't answer for the persons making the claims on the thread but I will do my best to say what I see as philosophically important for the Classical Liberalism discussion about the Common Sense school. First off, a thread from substack and page from a book by Scholastic...

@Libertyordeaf_ @thepalmerworm Now there we have an interesting topic -- Okham (to be clear he's a Conceptualist and not particularly a 'Nominalist' in the full sense of that word) vs the Subtle Doctor and the Angelic Doctor is a worthy topic.

About the Dominicans vs Franciscan thing, I start with the ... @Libertyordeaf_ @thepalmerworm 'Theology of Light' -- why start with optics? I think for whatever reason that the Franciscan theology of Light is the core of 'Western Science' as it now exists. That is I take 'Science' as I have learned and practiced it, to be a synthesis of Observation, Experiment, Maths.

@thepalmerworm Arithmetic and Geometry used to be taught from Euclid. I rather doubt that man ever made their acquaintance.

Early in Euclid there is a theorem that 'separates the men from the boys' ...

'A bridge for asses'en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pons_asin… @thepalmerworm The Latin proverb is 'repetition is a bridge for asses'... when I first heard that phrase, I thought it meant 'if you apply yourself hard enough and with enough repetition you can do anything you want'

As I got to know classical culture better I realised that is a modern take.

@thepalmerworm @thetrollbar @S_Coughlin_DC Here's some fun history. The terms Liberal and Conservative only date to the Spanish Cortes (their parliament). The Left and Right are a reference to the revolutionary National Assembly of the French Revolution of course.

Who cares about Liberales and Serviles? Latin America. @thepalmerworm @thetrollbar @S_Coughlin_DC The Freedom Party and the Serf Party. 'Conservatism' is a rebrand ... 'we're not about serfs. We're about conserving shit'
