I feel like people don’t get why Steve Jobs was ultimately so successful. It wasn’t because of his huge ego or because he could be a complete jerk. It wasn’t because of his incredible charisma, although that helped. And it wasn’t just because Steve could read the tea leaves and figure out where technology was going — yes, he did this very well, but he consistently was too early by five or ten years.

Here are my thoughts on why the tech world sucks now. Probably nothing super new here, but it’s been bugging me so I’m writing it down. When I started in tech in the 1980s it was still the refuge of outcasts and misfits. It wasn’t cool and it wasn’t a way to huge riches. The people who were into it knew what it was like to feel like outsiders.
