50 years ago high minded people said, forget space, fix the earth. That didn't work. Now its our turn, let us develop the space economy to fix the Earth.

Had a great experience this morning. The House of Bagels (4300 Great America Pkwy #132, Santa Clara, CA 95054), is staffed by a great Cambodian family. They escaped there in 1979, the year of the killing fields. They are wonderful people that have a great product. The great experience is that one of the owners and I are the same age. She was a kid when she escaped the killing fields of Cambodia and made her way to the USA. When she told me her age and when she got out, I had to cry a moment. She looked at me and said..

Dear @JeffBezos In 2003 when you, myself, and Walt Anderson sat down for breakfast in Seattle, we conveyed to you our greatest concern, which was that rich people in the space arena would cause more harm than good. I had the same talk with Elon. You both promised to do right. You promised to exert every means to do things right, to do everything possible to open the space frontier, as you and I consider ourselves "Gerry's kids". Elon has kept that promise. You have not. Please quit listening to those people who want to to act like a rich person.

In 1960 GE Chairman of the Board, Ralph Cordiner did a speech saying that if we used the methods of the Soviets (state control of space development), that we would ultimately lose the space race, better to use our free enterprise system. Today is a Cordiner's vindication. The Apollo program, without wise leadership, was not sustainable. The premise that we have to fix our problems on Earth before we go to space is the antithesis of progress. Indeed, we are where we are today, because of that bad decision 50 years ago.

I have no time to write up one of my engineering/science blogs so this is the cliff notes version.

NASA's internal planning (at least in some places), is moving toward a two SLS launch, because management is being told that the Gateway is not going to make the 2024 window. NASA got in this mess when it shifted from the Vision for Space Exploration (VSE) which did not mandate a heavy lift vehicle, to one that did. NASA got into this mindset in 1992 when the original Space Exploration Initiative (SEI) ran into trouble due to surface systems cost.
