This thread is a really neat demonstration of how Google's infobox stuff automates (and exacerbates) the pernicious "data void" problem "Data voids" are search engine queries that turn up little or no legitimate responses, and so can be stuffed with misinformation. The Microsoft researcher who coined the term considers them a security vulnerability datasociety.net/library/data-v…

I think it's worth understanding the difference between why a platform like Github would take things down under a “normal” DMCA takedown notice and under the RIAA letter over youtube-dl. First things first: platforms like Github have broad discretion over what they host. This has come up a lot recently in CDA §230 discussions, but the same logic holds with copyright; Github can take something possibly-infringe-y down just because they feel like it.

Holy cow, the RIAA has gotten youtube-dl taken off Github. DMCA notice: github.com/github/dmca/bl… I should say: Github has categorized the RIAA letter as a DMCA notice, but it's not really — that term generally describes communications sent pursuant to §512. This letter is about the §1201, the controversial anticircumvention rules.

After many delays and much uncertainty, Google v. Oracle will be argued for the Supreme Court in about ten minutes. I'll be tuning in. I had a thought the other day, which was: what do you think is the civil case (since I guess OJ's) that has sold the most t-shirts. And have I possibly sold the most t-shirts of any civil case since OJ.

this is a truly remarkable copyright censorship story. this "backdating" technique is being used at a much larger scale than it seemed this is the sort of reporting that bad actors are using copyright tools to censor from search results

As far as I can tell, the longest words you can spell entirely out of airport codes are each 9 letters long. It's quite an evocative list of words, too. AMSTERDAM is, of course, the only recursive inclusion here. It's wild that you could theoretically book a TER>ROR>IST itinerary. I bet that would raise some flags.
