People who know me are very aware of my support for Scottish independence and its rightful place among nations and peoples of the world.
But that support is based on the idea that an independent Scotland would be a more compassionate and more just than the Westminster polity.

We call people "fortunate" and "unfortunate" concerning socioeconomic status. We refer to wealth as "fortune".
If we unpack this, we find that we agree the well off are lucky and the poor unlucky. Hard work is a red herring that makes the well off feel better.
Many poor people work as hard as any wealthy person for their meager wages; many wealthy people don't work any more than poor person without "employment".
