I agree with some of the critique in this study.

I let you know what I agree with below.

The weakness of this study is its method of defining degrowth studies as studies with degrowth or postgrowth in title.

It misses many of the strongest studies that have shaped the field For example, strange not to consider

etc. there are more of those honestly... Which clearly influenced the literature if one knows itnature.com/articles/s4189…

There is a lot of misery in the world but one thing we all can do to make it a tiny bit better is drink less alcohol.

Alcohol is one of the worst drugs but widely available.

Men drink on avg. 3.5x as much as women across countries.

Germany is among the heavy drinkers. Image This is why I am glad this is starting to get more attention in the media and culture as for example in this excellent episode of heute show

Beff @BasedBeffJezos in his podcast with @lexfridman

"High variance of ideas needed... need to find optima for civilizational progress" etc.

*completely* agree.

Also Beff: tries to vigorously destroy idea opposite his own.

Here a few, hopefully, mediating ideas.🧵 "Rationalists" and expansionists, like Beff, like to think about win-win instead of zero-sum. Then why be so hard zero-sum with competing ideas?

Why not try finding some common ground?

New paper alert.
Happy to have contributed a little to this paper published yesterday in the Lancet Planetary Health.
The study was led by Joel-Millward Hopkins.
thelancet.com/journals/lanpl… What we have shown in this paper is that drastically reduced global inequality is a necessary condition for a climate-safe future with equitable well-being.

I just passed my PhD viva (no corrections).

My thesis being:

"Inequality, (re)distribution and luxury-taxation of international household energy and carbon footprints"

The last four years were intensive but rewarding.

Short 🧵👇 Massive thanks to all my supervisors @JKSteinberger @dr_anneowen @diana_nbd and Joel Millward-Hopkins.

Their advice and guidance was critical.

**LONG THREAD ** There are important confusions about the necessity of economic growth and the potential of redistribution for global equality circulating on twitter. @MaxCRoser (whose work I btw for the most part highly appreciate, OWID is great etc.) claims that economic growth is great because *GDP per capita* correlates with health indicators such as life expectancy and low child mortality. So far so good. On the other hand, he also claims redistribution would never suffice to lift everyone to a decent standard of living because
