Have you noticed how Crowley’s main objective this season is basically running to the rescue and saving others? First and foremost Aziraphale, obviously, but also Jim — both from the official manhunt and from himself, like in the window jump scene — and multiple humans 🧵 Image Crowley started off as an angel willing to question the highest — and only — authority in order to save not only his newest creations, but the whole vast, beautiful universe from the unjustified and untimely destruction

So a funny thing happened, I’ve been thinking and concluded that Metatron is even more evil. Aziraphale’s illusion of choice basically equals the one that the first Christians faced during their persecution - i.e., between spiritual death (betrayal) and physical death (martyrdom) Normally the angel would opt for the latter, but he’s responsible for more than his own soul here. Metatron knows that Aziraphale will be ready to sacrifice Their Own Side and collaborate with Heaven as long as the only alternative is persecution of both him and Crowley on Earth Image

Metatron didn’t have to temper with the coffee, he simply emphasized the addition of almonds (“the watchfulness of God”) to make his point clear. From the get-go he was presenting Aziraphale with a not so subtle threat: “Wake up, we’re watching you, and you’ve become a liability” The Hebrew word for “almond tree” is šāqēḏ, from the word “to watch or to wake”. The almond tree was named the “awake tree” because in Palestine it is the first tree in the year to bud and bear fruit. Its blooms precede its leaves, as the tree bursts into blossom in late January Image

So you know how Crowley’s confession is based on Darcy’s first proposal in the 1995 BBC miniseries - pacing around the room, struggling to speak, his voice breaking, even the clock behind him? Biggest difference - there’s a bird singing through the whole Pride and Prejudice scene

Overall, Darcy’s failed proposal is much longer, but you can clearly hear the birdsong from the very beginning. It’s filling in the pauses and at times almost overpowering the dialogue
