Every culture blog around the world told it's writers "We need you to write something about Wordle. It doesn't matter if there's absolutely nothing to say about it because it's just a fun little game - you need to come up with something" Image "It did not take long for me to conclude that Wordle is a metaphor for life" - A real professional article, not a quote from some nonsense essay I wrote at 11:59 during high school Image

I have an unconventional new theory on why some people may become "grifters" who post dumb takes for engagement: You know how there are people who sometimes don't try very hard at a thing, so that when they fail, they can say "Well, I wasn't really trying anyway", and it hurts less compared to if they failed even though they were trying their best?

To be clear, I was thinking not just of the pressure to stay relevant to your supporters, but also just the fact that being mired in this stuff is really toxic and bad for mental health. And also it's literally the same arguments rehashed over and over so it must get *boring*! Is colourblindness bad?! Should we use the term Whiteness?!

Stay tuned, the answers are coming soon. This time for sure we'll hash it all out!

Sometimes I feel like I'm guilty of this.

Other times I feel like I actually *am* being centrist for real 'cause I listen to voices I trust on here from "the other side", and it's truly hard to know who is right. Feel like I'm experiencing some cognitive dissonance... I don't even identify as a centrist lol, I just get called one so much that I start to internalize it and call myself one even though it's not what I believe

When I see something like this, I think "Okay, yes, that statement seems bad enough that I would really need to see an apology"

But when we coerce apologies, the person is forced to make one... and then you can't know if they really mean it.

So it's an impossible situation? You said something bad (Let's assume it's something *actually* bad not something innocuous that a mob pounces on unfairly)

But if you apologize, I'll think it doesn't count because you were forced to.

And if you don't, then of course I'll still be uncomfortable with you.

People need to adapt to this new reality where everything you say is saved publicly forever...

Not by policing their own thoughts, walking on eggshells, or deleting past posts,

But by a cultural shift where everyone realizes it's not okay to hold past comments against people! As someone whose social life was primarily online growing up, I have thousands of chat logs of myself from the age of 13 and up.

Not only should we not judge people too much for the past, but it can actually be *fun* to go back and look at it!

Or to track growth.
