There is a huge lurking leviathan of gatekeeping in the form of the systemic and near-universal inability for most fields to reward teachers and encourage learning - when we allow cognitive barriers to grow high we severely limit the breadth of those who can contribute It’s a completely systemic problem - no ill intention or tribalism - just what happens when a field grows in population much faster than in funding - such that internal competition becomes preferential to cooperation

I hope @niais doesn't mind me using this to branch of a discussion - but how many academics regularly suffer ability disabling overload? Whether it is in the form of a panic attack, burn out, executive dysfunction or any other disproportionate response to over stimulation* this feels like a common phenomena
