I'm going to start this thread with a boring tweet so no one reads it.
But what if using the term AIDS is a problem because people don't understand that *immune deficiency* is the *boss level* of untreated HIV infection, not the introductory open world gameplay.
Yeah, just pause and think about that.

Trump screws his voters again: He just denied disaster aid to Maryland (while giving it to red states). But I took a look. Turns out the ailing Maryland counties are in Appalachia and backed him by 40 and 54 points.

On the pod, @stevebenen and I discuss:

When Trump denied disaster aid to Maryland, he apparently thought he was punishing a blue state. But afflicted areas are Garrett and Allegany counties. Western MD is Appalachia. Those counties are deep in Trump country.

Details on pod w/ @stevebenen:

@stevebenen Those Maryland counties deserved this aid. The damage clearly qualified for federal assistance. Yet Trump denied Maryland (plus VT, IL) aid with no serious explanation (while giving it to MO, AK, NE, ND). We all know why.

@stevebenen is good on this:

The greatest Western delusion about China is, and always has been, greatly exaggerating the importance of plan. Like, in this case, for example. It sounds as if there is some kind of continuous industrial policy, for decades

Which is a huuuuuuge misrepresentation of reality
It is more like:

1. Mao Zedong dies. His successors be like, wow, he is dead. Now we can build a normal, sane economy. That means, like in the Soviet Union

2. Fuck, we run out of oil. And the entire development plan was based upon an assumption that we have huge deposits of it
3. All the prior plans of development, and all the prior industrial policies go into the trashbin. Because again, they were based upon an assumption that we will be soon exporting more oil than Saudi Arabia, and without that revenue we cannot fund our mega-projects

📣THREAD: It’s surprising to me that so many people were surprised to learn that Signal runs partly on AWS (something we can do because we use encryption to make sure no one but you–not AWS, not Signal, not anyone–can access your comms).

It’s also concerning. 1/
Concerning, bc it indicates that the extent of the concentration of power in the hands of a few hyperscalers is way less widely understood than I’d assumed. Which bodes poorly for our ability to craft reality-based strategies capable of contesting this concentration & solving the real problem. 2/
The question isn’t "why does Signal use AWS?" It’s to look at the infrastructural requirements of any global, real-time, mass comms platform and ask how it is that we got to a place where there’s no realistic alternative to AWS and the other hyperscalers. 3/

Thread 🧵: What Was Censored in Sky News Arabic: UAE Backing of Gaza Militias Image
Sky News English recently published an investigation into "The New Gaza," a project led by Mohammed al-Astal and several armed militias in Gaza. The report explicitly mentions UAE backing some of these groups.
The English report also notes that the logos of al-Astal’s militias closely resemble those of other UAE-backed militias in Yemen, highlighting visual and operational similarities.

1/ Russian warbloggers are angrily denouncing General Valery Gerasimov for blatantly lying to President Vladimir Putin about Russia's military progress in Ukraine during a televised briefing. They note that the incident highlights the persistent problem of false reporting. ⬇️ Image
2/ A few weeks ago, some observant commentators noticed that a map of the front lines seen in the background of a Russian Ministry of Defence video showed Russian positions kilometers further west than Russian or Ukrainian OSINT analysts had independently assessed them to be.
3/ Yesterday's Putin-Gerasimov briefing demonstrated that this was not just for show, but was being reported directly to 'the Supreme' himself. Gerasimov claimed that Pokrovsk and Myrnohrad were encircled, with 31 Ukrainian battalions surrounded by Russian forces.

The BBC has done it again!!!

This time with another new vanity project - the Global Story (which you pay for) - revising history - spreading misinformation - and promoting antisemitic conspiracy...

Thread🧵⬇️⬇️⬇️
The episode was about how 'Netanyahu gets what he wants from the US.' The premise? That successive US Presidents are little more than puppets of Benjamin Netanyahu. Image
Let’s be clear. The idea that Israel secretly 'controls' America is not journalism. It’s a classic antisemitic trope - recycled from The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, and dressed up in modern language. Image

Our previous reporting can be found on our Substack. There have been some challenges with technology; for example we were abruptly disconnected at several points last week. Apologies, this is beyond our control.

I’m surprised no one talks about using AI to create Shopping ads.

We’ve been running it across a few client accounts and it’s ripping for us right now.

This is the workflow we use:🧵
A while ago, we did a test on 2 different product images.

Over 90 days, here’s the result:

- Variation A: $189,645
- Variation B: $8,970

That’s a 21x difference. Just by switching the image style. Image
This shows how critical testing is, especially for product images.

And now with AI, you can generate dozens of variants in minutes.

This allows you to quickly launch tests, identify winners, and scale what works.

Now, let’s get into the process we use to make ads like these: Image

The Advisory Board of the Community Development Financial Institution Fund is staffed by leftists, and it funnels money into leftist causes.

For example: Justin Maxson, who sits on the board of the CDFI Fund, created a "racial equity lens" in his previous job. Image
2/
Jennifer Sun works at Asian Americans For Equality which "advances racial, social, and economic
justice for Asian American, immigrant and other systematically disadvantaged communities"

Again, it's a social justice focus. Image

🧵 Thread: China’s Silver Vaults Are Draining Fast — and No One’s Talking About It

Except few - THANKS TO @oriental_ghost Image
1️⃣Shanghai’s silver vaults are bleeding metal. Both the Shanghai Gold Exchange (SGE) and the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) are reporting steady outflows of physical silver since mid-2025.

This isn’t a rumor — it’s visible in the data.
2️⃣

Earlier this year, SGE inventories fell to ~937 tons, the lowest in 8 months (verified April 2025).

Now new reports suggest the vaults may have dropped below 1,000 T for the first time ever.

That’s not noise.

That’s supply stress.
