At his #StateOfTheCity address, @BilldeBlasio spoke about the challenges of caring for parents, children, & loved ones while working full-time jobs. I know this challenge firsthand, working for @cmlauriecumbo and caring for my mother living with #Alzheimers.

Several years ago, I moved back home to be with her in the house I grew up in. My partner and I pay out of pocket for my mother’s care bc our elder care/health care system is broken. We both work long days and barely make it home to see her.

Our #caregivers are rockstars & we couldn’t do it without them! There are enormous challenges to caring for an older parent - especially with a chronic ailment - and those who do it are presented with new challenges every day.

Just last night, we came home late and my mother wasn’t at home. We hadn’t experienced #wandering before & were scared for her to be alone at night in the cold. I took to the streets & thankfully I found her just a few blocks away. Thanks to @NYPD78Pct for responding to our call!

NYC needs to be a city where we can all thrive, get the care we need, and lean on financial, emotional and social support. Almost all of us will be #caregivers at some point in our life - for an aging parent, a new child, a neighbor, a partner, or a friend.

Folks at @caringacross & @domesticworkers have been introducing the idea of a universal care fund - one we all pay in to like #socialsecurity & can access when we need resources to care for our loved ones. Thank you @NYCMayor for lifting up so many stories just like mine
