A thread dedicated to international news reporting on events between 1980-1991. The #SNM's struggle for #Somaliland's liberation, the genocide perpetrated by #Somalia's Siad Barre against innocent civilians, and the events that led to the restoration of Somaliland's independence.

Lest we forget why the #SNM picked up arms in defence of #Somaliland civilians against brutal war of obliteration waged by Barre's #Somalia:

"The local gov. council is to be "reconstituted" and the local schools "diluted" by bringing in non-Isaaq children from refugee camps..."

"... at least 30 people were killed by the army during one day's rioting last week in the provincial capital, Hargeisa".

If you think this happened in 88 you would be wrong, article is dated March 6, 1982.

Formation of #SNM was only a response to gov. oppression of #Somaliland

Article continued...

"The Somali National Movement says that it is trying to contact the Hawiye in the hope of forming a united front."

Same article describes #Somaliland's #SNM's daring raid freeing political prisoners in Mandheera.
