What's important is that until now, much of the data about staffing in nursing homes was self-reported, which could be biased.

This issue came to light initially thanks to a 2017 @nytimes piece that had a great interactive.

But the study finds that staffing of all nursing staff spiked around the time when inspections happened, which again, could skew the data.

The fluctuations in staffing were particularly noticeable on weekends, when RNs were on site 42% less than during the week. That's roughly 16 minutes less care from RN staff than during the week.

Larger facilities, on average, have an even steeper decline in staffing on weekends.

There were also sharper declines for facilities who had higher shares of #Medicaid patients.

This study not only highlights this new data, but should also inform oversight and revolutionize how nursing homes are monitored.
