Our first open meeting in town was a great success! We had 35 attendees including @classicwenty, @wutrain, @ShannMurph617 from @MattOMalley’s office, @votepaulsully10 from @mfflaherty’s office, and @juliaforboston. Everyone who showed up wants a #SaferCentreSt for our @WRMS.

Our goal was to continue the important conversation that began earlier this year after the tragic death of Marilyn Wentworth, who was killed on February 5, 2019, in a car crash while walking across Centre St. to buy a cup of coffee from @ElRecreoCoffee

That same month, @BostonBTD and @MattOMalley engaged the community and heard that many residents involved in crashes when walking in town. @PeterFurth also talked about his prior analysis. We all demanded a #SaferCentreSt!

In April, @WalkBoston and @WRMS gave a presentation about how we can work together to make a #SaferCentreSt. They inspired @WestWalksbury’s formation by teaching us about #VisionZero and low cost, simple street solutions like road diets and daylighting.

With some appreciated encouragement from @mattjlawlor @MarkinRozzie @walkuprozzie, we led a walk audit of Centre between WR Pkwy and Weld where speeding is the norm. Families just want a #SaferCentreSt so they can safely walk to Fallon Field, @RosMainStreet or @PorterCafe.

We recommended 1) a road diet, 2) improved crosswalks, and 3) parking protected bike lanes to @MattOMalley @BostonBTD @WRBillyMac @ShannMurph617 and @WestRoxburyONS and we’re optimistic our feedback will be seen in upcoming restriping of this section.

Then we shifted speeds quickly to the Centre/Spring St business district where 1 pedestrian or cyclist has been involved in a car crash every 6 weeks since 2015! We knew multiple threats in crosswalks had to be addressed.

Our joint letter with @walkuprozzie @WalkBoston @StreetsBoston @WRMS @WestRoxBikes @bostonbikeunion @ProWRoxRoz @rozziebikes to @BostonBTD helped build an appetite for making a #SaferCentreSt via the classic all American road diet (@jeffspeckaicp)!

After a group walk led by @classicwenty, the @BostonBTD presentation on Centre St safety improvements was great! Over 80% of speakers supported the plan o change from 4 to 3 lanes and add parking protected bike lanes. The event had over 200 attendees!

Last night, we kept the conversation going with a recap of @BostonBTD’s presentation and heard a similar theme of widespread support for making a #SaferCentreSt. Many spoke about previous failed attempts and why this is so impt!

We reiterated that the average daily traffic volume through Centre via 3 lanes would not change and that increased cut through traffic in side streets is not expected but we are committed to addressing all ped safety issues in all of West Roxbury!

Attendees asked about how the plan will affect buses and deliveries for businesses, if we can improve signal timing and eliminate beg buttons, prevent double parking, how bike lanes would affect snow removal. Appreciated feedback from @bostonpolice community liaisons present!

Everyone shared great ideas and stories, asked hard questions, and showed their commitment to making a #SaferCentreSt. We look forward to continued conversations with @BostonBTD @wutrain @MattOMalley @WestRoxburyONS along with our #streethearts at @WestRoxBikes and @WRMS!
