In New Orleans, the modern iteration is the Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs. The traditions are unbroken. Still serving the Black community. Check out The Black Men of Labor. thebmol.org

If you've been to Mardi Gras, you probably went to the Zulu Parade and or Ball. Zulu is another Social Aid and Pleasure Club with unbroken traditions date back to Slavery. Still serving and partying. kreweofzulu.com

At that time, for a Black club to use an African name, black face, grass skirts and coconuts as throws, was an irreverent, royal "Fuck You" to white society.
