#GDR #OTD 1956- Playwright Bertolt Brecht dies in East Berlin (1)

Blacklisted in Hollywood after WWII and under pressure from HUAC, Brecht returned to Europe in 1947 (2)

In 1949, he settled in East Berlin founding the Berliner Ensemble theater company with wife, the acclaimed actress Helene Weigel (3)

During his time in East Germany, Brecht concentrated on directing; staged famous production of Mother Courage (4)

Brecht stood by the SED in wake of 1953 uprising; a letter of support to Walter Ulbricht was published in newspapers which said "History will pay its respects to the revolutionary impatience of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany” (5)

Yet, Brecht’s later writings on the East German Uprising of June 17, 1953 were also critical. From his poem The Solution: “Would it not be easier/ In that case for the government/ To dissolve the people/ And elect another?” (6)

Bertolt Brecht is buried in the Dorotheenstadt cemetery in Berlin with his wife Helene Weigel (7)
